W tym czasie odkryć i rodzącego się humanizmu szczególną rolę odgrywa Italia. Na półwyspie Apenińskim zmalały wpływy wielkich mocarstw, a miasta-państwa tamtego regionu Florencja, Wenecja, Mediolan, Rzym i Neapol przystępują do walki o dominację. Jako ich przywódcy, staniecie przed wyzwaniem uczynienia z nich lokalnych potęg. Zarządzajcie swym miastem, dbając o rozwój gospodarki, kultury i wojska. Przedstawiajcie się jako ludzie renesansu, bądźcie mecenasami sztuki i dochodźcie swych praw na drodze dyplomatycznej. W razie czego jednak nie bójcie się użyć siły, gdyż czasami tylko ona może przynieść pożądane rezultaty. Virtu jest grą asymetryczną. Tutaj każda z pięciu dostępnych frakcji posiada swoje mocne i słabe strony. Do zwycięstwa prowadzi wiele dróg, a elementów losowości praktycznie nie ma.

Rodowy prestiż
Przystępując do gry w Virtu, staniecie na czele jednej z pięciu potężnych dynastii: Aragonów z Neapolu, Sforzów z Mediolanu, Medyceuszy z Florencji, Dożów z Wenecji albo Borgiów z Rzymu. Waszym nadrzędnym celem stanie się posiadanie jak największej liczby Punktów Prestiżu, które będziecie zdobywać kolejno za: kontrolowane Miasta, postępowanie na torze Patronatu, poziom Wpływów Religijnych, zdobyte Trofea Wojskowe, Sojusze polityczne z wielkimi mocarstwami (Królestwo Francji, Imperium Osmańskie, Świętej Cesarstwo Rzymskie) oraz działanie niektórych kart i kafelków.

Komnaty i Przedsionki
Gra podzielona jest na Lata (rundy), składające się z dwóch faz. Podczas Wiosny wykonujecie akcje, a następnie rozpatrujecie Oblężenia i ustalacie Porządek Tury. Z kolei podczas Zimy wypłacacie żołd, rekrutujecie Żołnierzy i zawiązujecie Sojusze. Centrami waszego dowodzenia staną się Pałace, czyli plansze Akcji, na których widnieją Komnaty z nadrukowanymi akcjami: Zarządzania, Patronatu, Handlu, Przejęcia, Manewru i Intrygi. Na krawędziach plansz znajdują się Przedsionki, gdzie będziecie umieszczać pozyskane karty Dworzan. Z kolei zdobyte kafelki trafią nad wasze plansze do tzw. Strefy Wpływów.

Zarządzanie imperium
Na początku fazy Wiosny przesuwacie znacznik Akcji bazowo o maksymalnie 2 pola z jednej Komnaty do drugiej, wykonując przypisaną do tej Komnaty akcję. Do każdej akcji potrzebne są określone zasoby, takie jak Floreny, Korona, Krzyż albo Statek. Będziecie je pozyskiwać z kafelków lub kart znajdujących w samych Komnatach (karty Akcji i Usprawnień). Jeżeli zabraknie wam zasobów, możecie wykorzystać te znajdujące się na kartach Dworzan, a następnie odwrócić je na wyczerpaną stronę. Dworzanie znowu staną się aktywni, kiedy ich odwiedzicie, czyli w chwili gdy znacznik Akcji minie ich Przedsionek.
