Gra "Kakao" wprowadza graczy w egzotyczny świat "owocu bogów", w którym wcielą się w rolę plemiennych wodzów. Ich zadaniem jest wyspecjalizowanie swoich poddanych w handlu, by mogli zdobyć sławę i bogactwo. Jednak tylko ci, którzy wiedzą, jak wykorzystać przychylność bogów, zostaną obsypani złotem.

W trakcie rozgrywki gracze dokładają kafle pracowników i kafle dżungli do wspólnego obszaru gry. W swojej turze gracz musi wykonać następujące czynności we wskazanej poniżej kolejności:

  • Umieszczenie kafla pracowników (gracz wybiera jeden kafel pracowników z trzech dostępnych na ręce i dokłada go do przynajmniej jednego kafla dżungli znajdującego się w obszarze gry, tak by stykały się bokami)
  • Uzupełnienie dżungli (jeśli ze względu na dołożenie kafla pracownika na obszarze gry znajdą się dwie płytki pracowników przylegające do pustego miejsca na dżunglę, gracz musi natychmiast uzupełnić to miejsce)
  • Wykonanie akcji z kafli dżungli (każdy pracownik z nowo dołożonego kafla pracowników, który przylega do jakiegokolwiek kafla dżungli, zostaje aktywowany; dzięki aktywowanym pracownikom gracz może wykonać akcje z przylegających kafli dżungli)

Gra kończy się, gdy każdy gracz umieści wszystkie swoje kafle pracowników w obszarze gry. Zwycięża osoba, która zdobyła najwięcej złota.

Proste zasady oraz niedługi czas rozgrywki sprawiają, że "Kakao" to idealna gra dla całej rodziny.
