The SAAB JAS 39 Gripen E is the latest development version of the popular Swedish multirole fighter aircraft produced by the SAAB aerospace group. The aircraft's name Gripen refers to SAAB's coat of arms, which features a griffin and emphasises the aircraft's multirole capability. The abbreviation JAS is derived from words in Swedish meaning: Fighter Jakt, Assault Attack, Reconnaissance Spanning. The Gripen is a high-performance multirole aircraft capable of performing each of these tasks. Its duck configuration and delta wing configuration enable it to develop high speeds.

The E version is being developed for the Swedish and Brazilian air forces. The aircraft has lengthened slightly and its wingspan and weight have also increased. The designers report revolutionary changes to the avionics, a 22 per cent increase in engine power and an extended range of 4,075 km. The pilot's cockpit has also been upgraded. The JAS-39 Gripen E is a fighter infused with the latest technologies. Protected by electronic sensors and artificial intelligence systems, the pilot can focus on the mission at hand.
